Author Meetings: Modern Society in Indian Literature

Indian society is so diverse and complicated that literature is perhaps the best mirror to get a grasp of it. Idesbald Goddeeris (KU Leuven) will talk to a dozen of famous Indian writers from several states and generations. Each time, he will elaborate on a particular aspect of contemporary Indian society that is central in their oeuvre. The conversations are preceded by an introduction to the author’s bio and oeuvre. All roundtables are followed by a signing session. The bulk of the invited authors write fiction literature. Several of them have been translated into Dutch: the young talents Manu Joseph and Abha Dawesar, and the Slumdog Millionair creator Vikas Swarup. Two other authors are mainly known for their non-fiction and are both counted among India’s most authoritative opinion-makers: Pavan K. Varma and Tarun J. Tejpal. In addition, two evenings will be spent to the two major expositions being on display in Leuven, i.e. on architecture (21 October) and on missionaries (14 November).
